The origin of poker has been hidden under its rising popularity. The game is much like an ancient Persian game, but the name is derived from French, Dutch, and German origins. Earlier games possibly influenced the poker that we know today.
Early reports suggest that poker was played in New Orleans as early as 1829, with a deck of only 20 cards, where four players bet on who had the most valuable hand. Gambling was prevalent through the Mississippi riverboat system, where the game is said to have made its way through the country. The game quickly spread through the gold rush and became the game we know today.
The 52 card deck somehow became what we use.
New hand combinations and variations were used throughout the Civil War. These include the flush, draw poker, stud poker, and the straight. After that, more variations were created, such as wild card, lowball, split-pot poker and community card poker games. Texas Hold’em is one of the most popular poker games.
The spread of Texas Hold’em to other countries is attributed to the U.S. military playing the game overseas.
Poker lingo is an important part of American and English culture today. Phrases like in the hole, ace up your sleeve, beats me, blue chip, call my bluff, cash in, high roller, pass the buck, poker face, stack up, up the ante, when the chips are down, and wild card are examples of jargon that are based on poker. Even people who are unfamiliar with poker use these phrases.
Today, tournament poker is one of the most popular forms. Poker tournaments are usually held playing Texas Hold’em, and the World Series of Poker keeps things interesting.
In the last ten years, poker has increased in popularity. This can be attributed to online poker and poker on TV. Many different types of people and many variations are played online. Others watch the televised World Poker Series, which is of more interest because viewers can see the player’s cards.
While there are other poker stories that tell the origins, many are wildly unrealistic and untrue. The game is so mysterious, which may contribute to the popularity and mystique.
